African Countries Today: People, Economy, Resources & Education Africa is home to more than 1.4 billion people and is experiencing the fastest demographic expansion of any region. According to the World Bank, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the working-age population is projected to grow rapidly between 2025 and 2050, by over 620 million people — more than three-quarters of the net increase across all emerging and developing economies. World Bank+2African Development Bank+2 Economy & growth: Many African economies are resilient despite global headwinds. The World Bank projects 3.8% growth for Sub-Saharan Africa in 2025 (up from 3.5% in 2024), with an average of about 4.4% per year expected in 2026-27. World Bank+1 However, much of employment remains in low-productivity, informal sectors: only about 24% of employment is wage-paying. World Bank Resources & sectors: Africa is richly endowed with natural resources — minerals, oil & gas, arable land, forestry and fisheries. Agriculture still employs the majority of people in many countries, even though services and industry are growing.
