Pete – The Greed Influence Power In The Ring

Pete Brothers
Pete,  now in its second year, this Swahili drama may be slow, but I often come back to it because it’s an easy watch, can get you hooked if you are a lover of the language. Since it is folklore, it is suitable for various age groups.

The acting is OK, the story cute – if there is anything like that.
Available on Maisha Magic and Showmax.

The Story

Pete is a beautiful script. Each episode gently eases you to the next and keeps you hooked. In the remote Island of Funzi, two brothers vie for leadership after their father dies. However, this is only guaranteed if their father’s leadership ring from the beach accepts the leader chosen. However, the water spirits who lost the ring want it back.

The Actors

The team does a decent job of communicating their characters though the acting is not so good. The casting director could have done, but the leads look good together.

The director could have done a better job visualizing some scenes. For example, the scene where Stara runs away from home and drops her books could be better. So are the acts where someone is followed. The romantic scenes between Jasiri and Nuru could have been better. There is no chemistry, and though Nuru brings her best show, Jasiri doesn’t deliver; he is supposedly more in love than she is.

The Cast of Pete

Abdallah Bakari – Kalume

Aisha Mwajumlah – Nimimi

Alii Shahibu – Sudi

Gillie Owino – Msiri

Hillary Namanje – Kiza

Hindu Mohammed – Naima

Juma Mwatseka – Bundez

Leon Ongaya – Mbura

Mutran Tamim – Jasiri

Olivia Makena – Sitara

Rehema Rajab – Jinale

Rukia K. Ngonyo – Raziya

Sahara Mohammed – Karembo

Selestine Nyagha – Nuru

Sophie Reuben – Safira

Susan Kadide – Bi. Komo

Washington Opondo – Chuwa

In my opinion, the most believable character is Leon Ngaya, who acts as Mbra and his Wife Nimimi done by Aisha Mwajumlah.

Pete Technical Construction

The Pete cinematographer did a decent job; however, there are not enough shots of some scenes to send the message. As indicated above, the love scenes are wanting.

The editor tried, given the limited number of shots. However, some scenes could be enhanced using special effects like Safira’s scales falling everywhere around her and in food.

The theme music and score are perfect and more than delivers the mood and tension where everything else is lacking, e.g. the drowning of Stara.

In terms of design, my best moment was the failed wedding scene. I also like the chief’s chambers and balcony.

Conclusion

The Pete script holds everything together. A lot may be wanting; however, because the writing and language are so good, one keeps coming back for more because of a story to follow.

Rating

I give it a 6/10.
