Merry Men 1: Yoruba Demons

Lives of the party. Based in Abuja, Nigeria, this is a typical Robinhood type movie.

Four friends use business as a front to rob corrupt businessmen and government officials. Typically the guys get away with almost anything, can fight and love women. For Kenyans, I suppose twa, twa was from this movie.

Given that, though funny it may not be ideal for younger children and the script is not super simple so a little prior knowledge on public processes may come in handy to understand the movie. Available on NetFlix and Amazon

Merry Men 1: Yoruba Demons Trailer

In Yoruba Demons the four men and one girlfriend find themselves facing their biggest challenge yet when they antagonize a notorious and corrupt politician. He wants to demolish a village where one of them grew up, to build a shopping mall. The four men scheme to save the poor people of the village.
The script is not necessarily outstanding but the acting is. There are a number of funny phrases used and interesting perspectives of the different characters. The story is fast-paced in comparison to most Nigerian productions.

The Actors

The cast is mostly older and highly experience so the acting was great. With a star-studded cast, we expect nothing less. As usual Iretiola Doyle gave a stellar performance.  There really is no one particular actor/actress) who stood out for me as they worked perfectly together. The movie is entertaining and really worth your while.

All said, with the casting, I feel Richard Mofe and Ramsey Noah look almost the same age so for one to be the sone of the other doesn’t exactly cut it for me despite the rough aged voice of the ‘father ‘.

Technical Construction

The cinematography was good and so is the sound, theme music, and score. The editing is good, dramatic scenes great. The crowd scene when Ayo goes back home, the birthday party stood out for me. The designer thought these through.

Conclusion

The director did a good job. Everything comes together beautifully and Merry Men 1: Yoruba Demons is quite entertaining.
