Lately web series are increasingly popular; especially with lockdowns still going on and an upsurge of corona cases in a number of countries, entertaining yourself at home is a good idea – better is if the entertainment is free- well except for the data bundle cost.
Below are some of the latest and best African series you can watch for free on YouTube. They are not only as diverse as can be in theme and content but the quality is equally diverse. The list comprises some of the series that are running in 2020/2021. Have you watched any of them? What do you think? Are there any I should add in the next review?
If you love Web Series or Nollywood Movies, you will love Little Black Book. Based on a written series with the same title by Sally Kenneth Dadzie, the Little Black book tells the story of Tade, a brilliant business developer, who is trying to get her life back on track after a series of failures. Leo, a millionaire hotel entrepreneur who is defying the odds to keep his business in the green and a Little Black Book of gorgeous women, unfolding truths and hidden desires between them.
Produced by Lydia Idakula-Sobogun, the series stars Ikechukwu Onunaku, Teniola Aladese, Oreka Godis, Anee Icha, Floyd Igbo, Chimela Azurunwa, Kiki Omeli, Jeffrey Kanu, Omoye Uzamere
Possibly my best of this collection, Bad Gang features the antics of 5 university undergraduates. Seemingly the series revolves around a theme of stolen innocence, the need to survive, coming of age, love and, responsibility.
There are a couple of new faces. It features Shawn Faqua, Uche Nwaefuna, Deborah Anugwa, Becky Eloho, James Smart, Francis Onwuchie, Susan Pwajok and, Stephen Damian.
“Bad Gang” was directed and produced by Victor Opkala.
Kind of funny depending on your sense of humor, Inspector K covers the adventures of a comical crime-busting police detective. The third season debuted on November 25th, 2020.
The series is produced by Bola Atta, Demi Banwo and Folashayo Oke-Sobo. Main Actor is Koye Kekere Ekun as inspekta K, Ibrahim Jammal, Ani Iyoho. As with most such series there are many guest appearances in each episode.
Young at heart? You will love this! It rib-cracking and I honestly hope producer Orwi Ameh and directed by Bolaji Kekere-Ekun will keep it going for another reason. The series explores the experiences of a young woman dating in Lagos which could be transposed to anywhere in the continent. This is what makes it so appealing to an international audience.
Nengi Adoki the lead is toasted by different men and in each case, a comical yet frustrating aspect of the silly gimmicks guys play is exposed from a woman’s perspective. Actors in the 6 episode series include Demi Banwo, Bolaji Kekere-Ekun, Koye Kekere-Ekun, Es Dike Okolocha, Folaremi Agunbiade, Oshuwa Tunde Imoyo, Baaj Adebule and Tope Tedela. Nengi does such a good job in her role, the series, especially in scenes in her bedroom feels like just your G talking about her experience.
Done and dusted pretty fast. Got to know of this practice on the finale. This romantic story by Diane Russet tells of love and betrayal, loyalty, and frienemies.
Once again Teniola Aladese graces this set. Other actors include Stars Diane Russet, Daniel Etim-Effiong, Eso Dike, Abdul TJ, Debby Felix, Rita Edwards, and Daniel Abua
