Maskandi Queen

The story started off pretty cool but somehow I got bored after the school scenes. The script is simple, with very little happening. The acting is basic but the message is very solid and clear – do not be ashamed of who you are – for that it gets a couple o brownie points.

I suppose the signature song, beautiful as it may be, was repeated once too often.

A brief on what  to expect in this series how long it is why are watched it and what it is good for

The Story

A talented singer is ashamed of her culture and passion of maskandi music after she is ridiculed by her peers. It becomes her lifetime ambition to leave all this behind and granted she succeeds in a different business line but her past comes visiting. The death of her father, facing those from her past who made life difficult or hold her best memories, help her confront her present, and make firm decisions on her way forward.

Is her culture and her past love going to win over the trendy current and stylish present?

The Actors

First time I am seeing most of the actors in this set and it will be interesting if I meet them in other production. The acting was average but I would say some of them had a presence that was impressive and carried their roles pretty well. However overall the acting is wanting.

My favorite characters were Lasandra Majola who takes the role of Young Noma. Her excitement at Ntuthuko smiling at her, her singing and reactions all felt so real. Young Gabi acted by Thandolwenkosi Gumed was also the perfect bully.  Sbusiso Msimang made Smanga the perfect friend and felt like the guy you want to get to know as required of the script. Aside from these I probably would not have got to the end of this movie.

Technical Construction

The cinematography was good, lighting good, the music was amazing. The costumes and clothes Noma war were beautiful and more than added to the understanding of the story.

I loved the fashion show, the scenes at the oceanfront where Noma sings with her dad. All  these are quite memorable

Conclusion

There is really nothing outstanding about the movie it is just nice.

Rating

Given that nothing really stands out I give this film a 4/10
