You Again

You Again

You Again is not to be mistaken with the American 2010 movie, though this movie is equally comical, if not more so. It features Kenyan and Tanzanian actors, and Nick Mutuma directs it.

I think what I find most comic is how the ‘Kaligraph’ story comes to play at the movie’s end.

This is a great watch—light comedy, feel-good movie, great for movie night.

The Story

Coincidentally seven years later, exes Sophia and Kingsley are going through a rough life patch. Desperate to sort their lives, they end up for the same job interview and work as co-anchors. It is a bumpy ride, each trying to outshine or get the other out. Will peace reign eventually?

The script is quite good, and the balance of proper English and Swahili is quite good, so one can understand the story without necessarily getting sheng.

I like that the script is thought through, and the comical reason is given for why the relationship moves from the garbage to something romantic.

The Actors

I think the team does an excellent job. My favourite in this film is Neomi Nganga, who acts as the receptionist. Followed by Nick Mutuma as Kingsley, followed by Sophia’s sister Aida acted by Amalie Chopetta. Mimi Mars also does a great job with Sophia’s character.

My favourite scene is when Kingsley approaches the receptionist to find out what happened with Sophia.

You Again Cast

  • Amalie Chopetta – Aida
  • Brenda Anyango Ochieng – Magda
  • Eddie Mbugua – Mr Barasa
  • Fareed Khimani – Gerald
  • Kate Snow – Penny
  • Lenana Kariba – Ezra
  • Mimi Mars – Sophia
  • Morris Mwangi – Vinnie
  • Neomi Nganga – Receptionist
  • Nick Mutuma – Kingsley
  • Nyakundi Isaboke – cleaner
  • William Mwangi – Harold

The Technical Construction

The cinematography is good. The choice of location, I think, is good. The house and bar scenes for Kingsley and house and spa scenes for Sophia speak of the character’s personalities and add depth to their issues.

The score is good. On the other hand, given that this is a teen movie, and many kids will watch, some of the lyrics are not tasteful.

The editing was good, especially considering the parts where the exes are telling their story to different parties in different scenes. This transition is smooth, with no hitch making the comic more humorous.

Conclusion

Quite entertaining and well thought through and executed. I think Nick did good on this, ‘what he calls a labour of love.

Rating

I give this production a 7/10. It is one of the best I have seen recently from Kenya in terms of storyline, quality of execution and acting.
