Happy Women and Family Day, Tunisia!

Tunisian Women

Women and Family Day is celebrated every year on 13 August in Tunisia, and at first glance, you may wonder what makes it so unique. But its significance becomes crystal clear when you look at its history. After gaining independence from France, Tunisia introduced some of the most progressive family and gender laws in the region—including the complete outlawing of polygamy.

For an African nation, and even more so a Muslim country in the Middle East–North Africa region, this was groundbreaking. Even today, such legislation would make global headlines.

In honour of this legacy, Tunisia dedicates an entire week to highlighting women’s rights and family issues. And every year, thousands of Tunisian women take to the streets in a powerful women’s march to celebrate progress, demand more change, and honour the women who paved the way.

To me, this particular Women’s Day carries a depth that goes beyond the usual symbolic celebrations. Its impact is in real, tangible gains—legal and social protections that have changed the lives of generations of women.

It’s a reminder that every time we celebrate women, we should also reflect on how gender issues shape the family unit, the moral fabric of society, and ultimately the future we’re building for humanity.

Because at the end of the day, women’s issues are human issues.
