Chief Daddy 1, & 2

Ah Ah,! They brought all my favourite Nollywood actors in these 2 movies. I first watched Chief Daddy in 2019 and didn’t think much of it except that I liked… scratch that, loved the actors. The script is good and unique in some aspects. Then comes Chief Daddy 2 last year and this is fabulous! While chief Daddy 1 is funny, Chief Daddy 2 is hilarious!

These two are a good way to distress on movie night as ‘Njanuary’ comes to an end. They are an easy watch and give you a good laugh.

The Story.

Chief Daddy is an old man who is polygamous in nature but lives his life as monogamous dies unexpectedly. His string of concubines wives and children each try to find their place in the new family but its not going to be an easy ride right from the funeral ceremony.

In Chief Daddy 2, yet another child emerges to take over the running of the conglomerate just after everyone thought they had made peace. Individual family members struggle as they try to  adjust to living life without the riches of Chief Daddy.

While both movie scripts are Ok, I felt the first was better however a better intro of Laila,  Chief Daddy’s other child should have been done. It doesn’t make sense that she is not referred to in the will yet is a majority shareholder in his company in Chief Daddy 2. Eventually one can make sense of such information gaps but it is too much work piecing together information for you to enjoy the movie. Meaning everything comes together with at least 2 watches.

The Actors

The choice of cast is great. For a movie where there is no real lead all the actors seem to equally propel the story forward and use their screen time to really capture one’s attention without overwhelming fellow characters. I suppose this is what makes the comedy entertaining as each character brings their best game and the cast was full of exceptional talent. Some of the actors in the first movie are not there in the second like Ini Edo is only in the  first and Uzor Arukwe only ijn the second. The guest appearance of Castle and Castle cast Dakore Egbuson-Alande and Richard Mofe-Damijo gives a rare unique twist of Naija movies.
I think another aspect that the actors bring in these two movies considering they are almost all individually often leads is the ability to get with other characters. Felt this showed their exceptional talent especially with Patience Ogokwor and Nkem Owoh
All said and done I think Falz exaggerated his role, making him not just irritating as required in the movie but made parts of the movie too irritating to watch – so I found myself forwarding.

Technical Construction

The director did a good job of bringing together some of Nollywood’s’ best stars and ensuring none of them overwhelmed the other. The costumier went out of their way for the funeral and the party and lighting was great right through the movies. There was nothing outstanding with camera angels, no issue with the sound however, like highlighted before,  the issue of continuity could have been better for one to grasp the story.

Conclusion

The two movies are comedies and though they may not have been outstanding they are entertaining and a good watch. They are also a great tribute to Rachael Oniga who has since past away.

Rating

I      give the movie a 5/10
